Verizon Bringing LTE to U.S. En Masse

American wireless provider Verizon has released additional details concerning its move to roll out its commercial LTE network across the United States and, while the original plan to have everything in place by Q1 2010 is all but lost, an impressive upgrade is still on the way. Verizon’s Senior Vice President and CTO Tony Melone recently offered details of the burgeoning networks, saying that the company hopes to have their LTE network launched “in the not too distant future” with full LTE coverage for more than one third of Americans before the end of the year. That number will double within 15 months of the initial launch and Verizon plans to have 4G coverage to match their 3G coverage by 2013

Android 2.2 Froyo Source Released

While roll-outs of the official update seem to be taking longer than expected, Google has officially released the source code for version 2.2 of the Google Android mobile operating system, dubbed “Froyo.” The release of the source indicates that the Open Handset Alliance is happy with the state of the code and that 2.2 is officially ready for deployment on compatible devices. When exactly updates are made available is up to manufacturers and providers but consider them “coming soon” as of today.

Windows 8 Details Revealed

Microsoft is continuing its hard push on the surprisingly popular Windows 7 with literally seven copies of the OS being sold per second but a recent leak of apparent Windows 8 development material suggests that they are quite able to multi-task. The improvement of speeds in transitions such as user account change, shutdown, boot and hibernation appear to be priorities but the real stand-out themes revolve around facial and gesture recognition.

Apple App Store Hits 3 Billion Downloads

Apple’s App Store never ceases to amaze us, and in less than 18 months, the App Store has managed to chalk up 3 billion downloads! It almost seems like yesterday that we were reporting on the 1 billionth download from the App Store , and just like that, it’s at 3 billion downloads. Taking into account that the App Store has more than 100,000 applications, it certainly doesn’t look like the competition will be catching up anytime soon, even though the Android Market seems to be coming along nicely. What milestone will the App Store target next?

Skype Now Sports HD Video Calls

It seems like televisions aren’t the only things going high-def in 2010, as Skype 4.2 beta will also support HD video calls, as long as users have a HD webcam and enough bandwidth. The software was actually available back in early December 2009, but Skype was rather mum on the HD feature, probably preferring to keep the big announcement for CES 2010. Skype promises that the software is capable of 720p HD video at 30 frames-per-second
